SPIRITUAL WORKS AND EVANGELISM

Apart of the philanthropic work, the Orthodox Metropolis of Madagascar also nourishes the soul of many native Malagasy people by introducing them to the Orthodox faith. A Theological Seminary runs a two year course which aims to prepare candidates for the priesthood and to teach and train catechists for mission work in isolated villages.

Approximately 1200 Malagasy natives embrace the faith every year through Holy Baptism. Group baptisms are performed in churches, or rivers or even under shady trees where young and old can come together and become new members of the Body of Christ.

An annual spiritual retreat is organised for 80 young boys and girls of primary school age. The aim of these retreats are to educate children in the Orthodox Faith and way of life, as well as enabling them to interact with other Orthodox children in an Orthodox environment.

The Divine Liturgy and other church services are performed in the native language. The Orthodox Metropolis currently has 37 priests and 2 deacons. There are over 80 churches and 175 parishes. Many liturgical and spiritual books are being translated into the native language.
